Ahmedabad has become the first city in India to be designated as a 'A World Heritage City'. What is the next step to save this prestigious status?! What are the key issues which need to be addressed to help protect and maintain the historic character of the city and it's identity?! If the historic buildings and areas of the city are neglected, left unused, finally leading to their deterioration and demolition, will it not be an irreversible loss to the city's heritage?!Let's find out the ways in which to address the issues affecting the old historic buildings in the walled city area, their common problems, how to make them adapt to changing times and needs of the owners and residents and ways in which to intervene to safeguard and maintain the old structures.
The historic buildings form the city's heritage core and their preservation and adaptive use is one of the vital areas to be addressed for the sustainable development and maintaining the World Heritage status of Ahmedabad. This course will be a site and class room based excercise wherein selected case studies would be taken up to find solutions aimed at a creative fusion of old and new according to its suitable surroundings for a meaningful preservation of our heritage.
