EXPLORING NATURAL BUILDINGS

This is a hands-on course aimed at helping students imbibe a holistic understanding of natural buildings. We will be working in collaboration with Thannal Hand Sculpted Homes –“a natural building awareness group based in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu”- by experimenting, studying and documenting the possibilities of local materials and alternate building techniques. Students will engage in the making of foundations, cob wall, wattle & daub, bamboo structures, natural plasters and colours, while understanding preparations, procurements, testing, treatments and components. Such learnings will be applied in undergoing projects of Thannal, along with visits to similar buildings throughout the period of the course.
Active participation from the students is expected, since the course will involve direct contact with construction materials, teamwork and outdoor physical activity. The final outcome from this collaboration -aside from the 1:1 scale implementation of the techniques- is a series of exploratory material samples that will consolidate the experimentations, along with a detailed documentation of the processes.
This course will be assisted by Kruti Shah (Visiting Faculty) from CEPT University and Sundar Rajaganesh supporting professional from Thannal.
The students will need to pay a mandatory amount of 9,500 INR (workshop cost which includes material cost- please note this cost could decrease if the no. of students registered increase) to the organisation-Thannal within a month of course registration.
Expenses for students- Accommodation, food and local transport: 9,000+ Travel expenses as mentioned in Expenses.
