Reza Ghafouri was born in Bandar Abbas, Iran. He holds his Master’s degree in Architecture by Azad University of West Tehran in 2014. He started working as an architect with “Design Core 4th Space Consulting Engineers (DC4s)” in 2007. Later, he joined “Bam Citadel of Kerman Consulting Engineers” in 2011 and “Marz Design Studio” in 2015. He also had short term collaborations as an architect with the governmental organization and private companies containing “Zamin-Sang Construction Company” in 2002, “Organization for Development, Renovation and Equipping of Schools of Hormozgan” in 2009 and “Khak-Khesht-Sara consulting Engineers” in 2010. Besides working professionally as a registered architect in Iran, he is also active in academic fields focusing on his main interests related to design and fabrication and context-based architectural design.
Architecture has been being affected by different parameters among which “Material” could be considered as the key factor in shaping our built environments. The advent of the first “Construction” in absence of “Architecture” as a discipline indicates the role of working with local materials and exploring their potentials as well as the method of use. Besides being interesting, the study of material & construction techniques seems to be a necessity towards architectural evolution and to create a more sustainable world. Geographical dimensions and climatic factors provide a field under which people begin to explore contextual materials and techniques of construction.
“Bandarabbas”is a port city&capital of “Hormozgan” Province on the southern coast of Iran,on the Persian Gulf. The maximum temperature in summers can reach 50°C while in winters the minimum temperature may drop to 5 °C. The annual rainfall is around 170 mm and the average relative humidity is 65%.Location of Bandarabas and its climatic characteristics caused people use materials in a specific way in order to create livable built environment.
Besides casting a glance at the frequently used local materials, this workshop will specifically study wood & the scale of construction techniques which span from handicraft to furniture design as well as shipbuilding industry to building construction in Bandarabas.Understanding the context and exploring the potentials of wood and the existing techniques, will create a platform to rethink the material and give a new response to wood characteristics. This process will meet the design & fabrication of a real scale wooden pavilion as a prototype.Expenses for Students:Material Cost:Rs 4000/,Food&Stay:Rs 54000/,Local Travel:Rs 5600/- + travel expense as mentioned in expenses.
