Art for Design Sake: Understanding Contemporary Art in 21st Century

This course is designed to critically explore and attempt to grasp concepts surrounding contemporary art through a designers perspective. The lectures, presentations and assignments will help students to demystify contemporary issues used within the context of art and design. The course shall also help students to understand the complex relationships between art and other topics such as technology, identity, narrative, body in space, ideas of time and understanding popular culture. This course is meant to challenge conventional notion of art and design, both technically and theoretically, so that we become familiar with contemporary art in a globally influenced, culturally diverse, and technologically advancing world. We will survey the work and ideas of artists and designers who have explored new interdisciplinary forms, as well as thinkers who have developed methodologies that influenced both Art and Design in the twenty-first century.
