UNDERSTANDING THE HUMAN LIFE AND URBAN SPACES IN THE CITY OF SYDNEY.

The course aims to develop critical thinking towards the very notion of relationship between public realm, the city and their socio-cultural and morphological connotations in contemporary conditions. In particular, the course will explore the public life in the urban context focusing on deep understanding of the city of Sydney, its historical center and its new urban areas. The main objective is to onsite test, explore and critically reflect not only on the notion of public space and both its material and immaterial aspects but also on the tools and techniques of reading and mapping of the phenomena. The sites for study will be mostly public spaces with different character and identity.
During the first part of the course student will have to understand, map and document the different urban scenarios, they will be engaged in the study of the relationship between morphology and typology aspects of urban conception and its social-cultural manifestations.
The second part of the course will be focus on the final outcome: photographic documentation, mapping, interviews and culminating into a short documentary describing the relationship between urban spaces and life of the city for more humanistic and experiential characteristics.
This course will be conducted as a part of collaboration between CEPT University and UNSW Sydney where students and instructors from both universities will work together in joint teams.
