Material Computation is a design strategy that can be utilized by controlling inherent properties of material (length, size, density, etc.) electronically. This course will explore 'smart materials' - which can be programmed for specific design challenges(climate, space usage, preferences, etc.) that can arise in myriad of architectural situations. Besides learning about existing cases and synthesizing their techniques, the course will take (a) hands on programming, (b) prototyping in utilizing smart materials (c) their fabrication (d) working assembly detailing. After completion of the course, the participants will be able to integrate these concepts in their design projects, detail them and explore a new dimension in built environment design. The course is structured in three stages, primary stage will include equipping participants with technical know how of using allied scripting techniques and hardware to utilize smart materials. Intermediate stage will explore possibilities and application to spark application level ideas. Third stage will involve group level prototyping - discussion - review of the design. Key take a ways: (1) Application level knowledge of various smart materials (2) Learning use of sensors actuators in architectural design (3) Basic scripting - Rhinoceros Modeling - Grasshopper (4) Using Arduino micro-controller board for building working prototype (5) A take home - Arduino + Sensors + Programmable material tool kit (6) Utilizing material computation strategies in real time architectural situations (7) Making a scale architectural prototype.
