PUBLIC AFFAIR: DECODING PRINCIPLES OF URBAN PUBLIC REALM THROUGH EFFECTIVE MAPPING IN AHMEDABAD

The course will be focused on understanding the relationship between the public life and the housing in Ahmedabad. The aim of the course is to study, to document and to map the different ways of living and the uses of the public and collective spaces in various housing typologies in the city of Ahmedabad.
At the beginning of the workshop, students will formulate a Research questions / Hypothesis related to the use of public places, perceptions of the urban form, the relationship between density, housing types and livability etc. based on their initial visits. The hypothesis will be further explored through series of mapping studies such as direct observations, field measurements, surveys and interviews. The data collected will form the basis of analysis and inferences will be expressed through graphical representations of students’ findings.
The course will be a journey discovering the ‘life’ of public and collective spaces of Ahmedabad. Students will be encouraged and guided to find relevant issues and to provide a common ground to engage a meaningful debate on the role of housing in the city of Ahmedabad.
The course will be conducted as a part of the collaboration between CEPT University and Politecnico di Milano, where students and instructors from both universities will be working together in joint teams. Following this Winter School, a course will be proposed in Milan during next Summer School.
THIS COURSE WILL START ON 08.12.2018 (SATURDAY) AND FINISH ON 17.12.2018 (MONDAY).
