WAYS OF SEEING STRUCTURES IN ARCHITECTURE: DECODING THE WORKS OF MASTERS- CANDELA, OTTO & GAUDI

Introduction: Structure is an integral and inseparable part of any built form. Understanding of structural principles and application of the same in structures is very essential for designers. Structure, Material and Form - how they are selected, manipulated and associated in design plays a vital role in creating experience of space. This course is an attempt to explore the three different approaches of working with form and material. Works of three masters namely Felix Candela, Frei Otto and Antoni Gaudi will be studied to understand three different approaches of generating forms in three different materials.
Methodology:
Knowledge of structural systems along with structural actions will be imparted to the participants through discussions and lecture presentations. The model making exercise will be carried out to understand the entire process of developing forms using the method of catenary, soap bubbles and geometry.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the workshop participants will gain the basic understanding of structural actions and systems. They will also gain the first hand experience of development of form in different materials.
